How to understand the Facebook algorithm and improve your social media marketing strategy

How to understand the Facebook algorithm and improve your social media marketing strategy

Facebook is often a crucial part of social media marketing strategy!

Facebook is massive! It currently has around 1.13 billion daily users and over 70% of online adults use Facebook. Facebook has a fairly even split of male and female users and spans the full age demographic.

Advertising on Facebook is quick and easy! You can easily reach your specific target audience by spending a relatively small budget.

When I work with businesses, most people assume that everything that they post on Facebook is seen by all of their followers.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Facebook has developed an algorithm to decide which of your posts will make it onto your followers news feeds.

Your followers only see a selection of your posts.

If Facebook is part of your social media marketing strategy, then you need to understand more about how the algorithm works –

The principles of the Facebook news feed –

Facebook always prioritises users friends and families. Your posts are always likely to follow posts from your followers friends and families.

Facebook aims to deliver authentic content that it’s users want to see the most.

Genuine authentic content will always be prioritised ahead of spammy content.

Social Media Strategy - things that you should be doing on Twitter

Help with marketing – Thinks that you should be doing on Twitter

To ensure your posts make it onto as many news feeds as possible, you should –

Include images, video and links in as many of your posts as possible.

Upload videos directly to Facebook instead of linking from YouTube or Vimeo. Longer more engaging videos will perform better than shorter ones.

Encourage your followers to interact with your posts (without asking for likes, comments and shares in the post).

Post on seasonal, topical and trending content.

Make sure your Facebook page profile is as complete as possible.

Avoid using clickbait or similar tactics.

Not link to web pages that are very slow to download.

Avoid repeat posting the same posts over and over again.

Not use highly promotional content or push people to buy something or click on something.

The Facebook algorithm loves –

Posts with lots of likes, comments and shares. Especially ones that receive high levels of engagement in a short space of time by friends.

There’s been a lot of news recently suggesting that brands have experienced significant drops in engagement levels due to some more algorithm changes by Facebook.

If you follow the advice in this blog post, then you should grow your Facebook audience and engagement levels.

Back 2 basics – the best business networking tips

Are you looking for business networking tips to use at your next business networking event?

I think everybody should be attending business networking events! Business networking is a great way to expand your networks, acquire knowledge and make new connections.

Business networking is great for personal development and confidence building and it’s also the most cost effective way to generate new business opportunities!

There are lots of different business networking events. Some are more formal and structured, others are more relaxed. I advise finding the style of event that works for you!

Are you getting the most out of the business networking events that you attend? Do you have a business networking strategy that clearly defines your aims, objectives and goals? Is business networking ‘working’ for you?

This is my back 2 basics guide – how to improve your business networking – the best business networking tips –

Before we look at some business networking tips, lets ask ourselves why we attend regular business networking events?

Most people attend business networking events to find out about new business opportunities, make new connects with other links minded business people and to ultimately generate new enquiries or sales opportunities.

Here’s some other reasons why you should attend business networking events include –

Raise your (and your business) profile

Receive the right kind of advice

Increase your personal confidence

Become the ‘go to’ person

Developing new friends

Benefit from helping other people

Business networking tips – the main reasons why you should participate in business networking

My first business networking tip – find the type of event that works for you!

These are the main different types of business networking events –

Casual Contact Events

Strong Contact Events

Community Groups and Forums

Industry Specific Networking

Conferences, Trade Shows and Exhibitions

Private Invitation Only Events

Social Groups

Women Only Networking

Initially I recommend attending lots of different types of networking events whilst keeping an open mind.

Different people naturally prefer different situations and environments.

When developing your networking strategy and plan, it’s important to know which events ‘work for you’ and make you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Ask yourself ‘why’ you attend business networking events!

Like all types of marketing activity, you’ll experience more positive results if you have a plan in place and have developed some key aims and objectives.

Why do you attend? What do you want to achieve? Is it worth your time? Are you wasting your time? What could you do better or differently?

All of these questions become a lot easier to answer if you actually have a strategy in place.

I like to break networking strategy into the following 3 stages –

1. Preparation – Preparing A Networking Strategy
2. Networking – What To Do At The Event
3. Following Up – What To Do After the Event

One of my favourite business networking tips – develop and practice your ‘elevator pitch’ –

According to Wikipedia the elevator pitch is – ‘A short summary used to quickly and simply define a process, product, service, organization, or event and its value proposition.’

At a networking event the likelihood is that people are going to ask you who you are and what you do. So it’s well worth developing and practicing your ‘elevator pitch’.

The best business networking tip – Don’t forget to follow up –

The ‘follow up’ is crucial! There’s no point in attending lots of events and meeting lots of new contacts, then forgetting about these people as soon as the event has finished!

Following up isn’t about collecting as many business cards as possible then letting them gather dust on your desk.

The follow up is essentially doing what you said you would do within an acceptable timeframe! Not doing the follow up is simply unforgivable. In the long run it will only damage your credibility and reputation.

So what is business networking really all about?

Don’t forget my definition of business networking –

‘Business networking is NOT about selling, it’s about building relationships built on trust.’

Business networking is about helping people! When you attend your next event and meet a new contact, ask yourself – how can I help this person!

Of all of the best business networking tips, this one really is the most important!

Twitter doubles the character limit for tweets – what this means for your social media marketing strategy

Twitter doubles the character limit for tweets – what this means for your social media marketing strategy

Last Tuesday Twitter announced that it has started to test 280 character tweets. This means the 140 character limit could potentially double.

Twitter’s explained the development by stating –

“Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people tweeting in English… When people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting – which is awesome!”

Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s Chief Executive described the test as “a small change, but a big move”

Initially the increased character count will only be available to selected Twitter users, but if they roll this out across the whole channel, this could be on of the biggest developments in social media marketing history.

What could the change mean for your social media marketing strategy –

Earlier in 2017 I wrote a blog post predicting future social media trends.

Here’s what I said about Twitter –

“Twitter will survive, but evolve further. At this time last year, lots of experts were predicting the death of Twitter.

In 2016, as Twitter struggled to keep up with the active user numbers of other channels, it made some pretty major updates, including changing what is counted in the 140 character limit.

I think Twitter will continue to exist, but 2017 will see more changes, updates and developments. New features including live streaming and real time news are apparently in the pipeline.”

Social Media Strategy - things that you should be doing on Twitter

Help with marketing – Thinks that you should be doing on Twitter

It appears that changes, updates and developments are on the horizon.

The character count of tweets in Twitter has always caused frustration and concern especially for English writing users. 140 characters was originally selected to resemble the length on sms messages.

It’s reported that around 10% of all tweets are exactly 140 characters. I don’t think this is a coincidence. The authors of these tweets have probably spent time deleting characters to ensure their tweets fall below the allowed character limit.

Only last year Twitter made some changes to what would be included in the character count. They removed @names in replies, media attachments (jpegs or movies) and quoted tweets.

Read more about the 2016 changes here –
Twitter update – a guide to understanding the recent changes

The experiments from last week suggest that more changes are required to increase the user base and encourage existing users to be more active.

Doubling the character limit might sound drastic – but rumours suggest that Twitter have considered a 500 or even a 1,000 character limit.

Facebook and Instagram user numbers are increasing significantly while Twitter still has a relatively small active user base –

Facebook has around 1.13 billion daily active users and Instagram has 500 million monthly active users.

Twitter has only 313 million monthly active users.

If increasing the character limit encourages more people to tweet, then I think it could be a good thing. But Twitter still needs to do more to make up ground on the other social media channels.

Facebook and Instagram advertising are the latest trends to draw users to these channels. The emergence of groups is also a significant recent social trend.

Increasing the character count is a great start, but Twitter still needs to do more to make up lost ground.
